For a while now, I’ve felt the itch to share some of my interests online and play around in the content creation field. I thought about doing a podcast because I love interviewing people. I work in marketing, so maybe an Instagram or TikTok account with tips and how-tos would work. I had plenty of ideas, but nothing felt authentic. In fact, it all felt kind of scary and out of reach.
As a child, I used to pretend I was a famous actress being interviewed on a TV show. In college, I tried blogging. And today, when I’m alone in the kitchen, I pretend to be a chef teaching recipes—talking to an imaginary audience and all 🙈. The desire to communicate and connect with people is real, but I couldn’t figure out how to make it happen.
One day, as I was juggling thoughts, I asked myself: “Why am I living so small? Why am I holding myself back?”. That same day, a friend reached out and asked for my help to create a newsletter.
A newsletter? I loved the idea! I had only heard of Substack, but that’s what I suggested to her. As I dug in, I realized how perfect it was for her project—she already had a podcast and plans to monetize her content. Bingo!
It’s funny how all the little moments build up
In December of last year (2023), I signed up for a Polar Plunge at my local recreation center. "Polar" is a stretch since I live in hot Arizona, but it was still winter, and the temperature wasn’t exactly inviting for a pool jump. I’m not a water person by any means, but something about that challenge called to me. I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t do it. So, there I was, standing by the pool with other ladies, they counted “3, 2, 1” and I jumped. The cold water was electric! Going from dry and warm to wet and cold in a second was a shock, but it made me feel so alive, so excited, and proud of myself. I had done it!
Putting ourselvesf out there is a lot like jumping into a cold pool—we know it’ll be a shock at first, but once we’re in, we’re glad we did it. We step out of our comfort zone and realize there’s so much more out there.
When my friend asked for help setting up her newsletter, I suggested Substack, even though I barely knew the platform myself (I’m still figuring it out). But something inside me lit up, and as I helped her, I decided to dive into my own project too. Three weeks later, we both have our own publications! You can check out hers here.
Everything that came before was preparing me for this launch—including all the time I spent holding back from sharing online, worried about what people might think or how they’d judge me. But we can’t contain our authentic self forever; eventually, it demands its time in the spotlight. And now, here it is—my time to let it shine! ✨
My trick is not to take myself too seriously. We all fumble, say weird things, or post something that makes us cringe a year later. But the only way to get better is to keep showing up, mistakes and all.
In the end, the worst-case scenario is rarely as bad as we imagine, and the reward is usually much better than we ever thought possible.
